Student Leadership Council
The Department of Veterans Affairs Welcomes Its Newest Volunteer Program
The Student Leadership Council Enables Students to Serve Veterans
The Student Leadership Council is a program designed to shape the servant leaders of tomorrow from top students of today. The SLC offers a curriculum centered on the principles of effective leadership. Students then are given opportunities to apply these principles in service to the Veterans living in their community.
Experienced mentors will offer their support to students as they design and execute personal service projects. Examples from students in 2021 include:
- Organizing food and blanket drives for homeless Veterans
- Developing seminars to offer suicide prevention training
- Planning events to honor the lives and service of Veterans
- Recording Veteran’s stories for the benefit of future generations
Students will also work together to complete a national service project aimed at strengthening the Veteran community’s connection with the VA and providing them with comprehensive and quality healthcare. In 2021 SLC ambassadors, in collaboration with MyHealtheVet, reached out to 76,000 Veterans and assisted them in upgrading their VA healthcare plan. This upgrade will allow these Veterans to receive telehealth appointments and improve the quality of their care.
Every aspect of the SLC is focused on improving the lives of Veterans (and the Veteran Community). If students want to become stronger leaders and make an impact on the lives of others, the SLC is the perfect opportunity for them.
